ROBERT DICK

A flutist whose technical resources and imagination seem limitless.
New York Times

He is one of those rare creators (think of Liszt with the piano or
Paganini with the violin) who have effectively reinvented his

instrument, creating an entire glossary of fresh techniques.
Washington Post

There are few musicians that are truly revolutionary. Robert Dick is
one of them.

JazzTimes

Robert Dick is
internationally recognized as a composer, performer
and improviser. The acknowledged master of the contemporary
flute, he has revolutionized the soundworld of the instrument,
creating literally thousands of new sounds for flute and a wealth of
new musical approaches for the flutist. He has performed solo
recitals of his music throughout the Americas, Europe, Japan and
Australia.
Dick has had a major impact on flute playing everywhere through
his pedagogy, including countless masterclasses throughout the
Americas, Europe, Australia and Asia. In print, his pedagogy
includes the seminal books The Other Flute: A Performance
Manual of Contemporary Techniques, Tone Development through
Extended Techniques and Circular Breathing for the Flutist plus two
volumes of the etudes Flying Lessons.  Instructional CDs and DVDs
--and now his series of instructional videos on YouTube -- illuminate
his ideas and music for students and professionals everywhere.
The National Flute Association (USA) presented Robert Dick with
its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
For the past quarter century, Dick has been contributing to the
evolution of the flute itself.  His invention, the Glissando
Headjoint™, telescopes to do for the flute what the “whammy bar”
does for the electric guitar.  The Glissando Headjoint™ is being
made under Robert Dick’s own name and is available through
www.robertdick.net and flute shops.

Dick has released over 40 CDs of original solo and chamber works
and collaborations with fellow creative musicians.  Other of his CDs
feature music by Telemann (the Fantasies for flute alone) and Jimi
Hendrix.   Among his more recent recordings are “Our Cells Know”,
improvisations on contrabass flute (Downbeat Magazine 5 stars)
and “The Galilean Moons” original music for flutes and piano with
Ursel Schlicht.

Dick studied flute with Henry Zlotnik, James Pappoutsakis, Julius
Baker and Thomas Nyfenger. He holds a B.A. from Yale University
and an M.M. in composition from the Yale School of Music where
he studied composition and electronic music with Robert Morris,
Jacob Druckman and Bulant Arel.
Robert Dick teaches flute and coaches improvisation and chamber
music at the Steinhardt School at NYU.  He is also on the faculty of
the City University of New York Graduate Center.  He maintains an
active private teaching studio, which includes working with flutists
the world over using Skype.
